Year 2 Spellings

There/Their

The children are learning to spell and use the two words THEIR and THERE correctly in sentences. Write sentence for your child and get them to identify if they need to add THEIR or THERE. Then get your child to practise writing sentences with both THEIR and THERE in making sure that they are using the correct one.

There – refers to a place of position – ‘Children are playing over there.’ ‘There is a bird in the tree.’

Their – refers to ownership or belonging. ‘The children are wearing their school uniform.’ ‘Their lunch was very tasty.’

Adding the suffix ed

Children to practise reading and writing words that have had ed added as a suffix. When ed is added to the end of a word it becomes past tense.  Children to then practise writing these words in sentences. Extension – children to generate their own list of words and to then add the suffix ed.

Walk – walked                                                          Jump – jumped

Talk – talked                                                            Cook – cooked                   

Bake – baked                                                           Play – played

Push – pushed                                                          Shout – shouted               

Rush – rushed                                                          bath – bathed

 

Adding the suffix ing

The suffix ing is added as a suffix to a verb to show that something is happening and that it is in the present tense.  

Children to practise reading and writing words that have had ing added as a suffix. When ing is added to a word it becomes past tense.  Children to then practise adding ing to words and then writing them in sentences.
